School Day Absence
In the event of an absence:
1. Call the School:
A parent or guardian must call the school before 9:30 a.m. on each morning of the absence. A message can be left on the phone mail system of the Attendance Office by calling (510) 881-4340. E-mails and/or faxes are not acceptable substitutes for a call.
A tardy at the start of the school day is defined as arriving at the attendance office before 8:15 a.m. Late arrivals are defined as arriving at the attendance office between 8:16 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Absences are defined as arriving at the attendance office later than 8:45 a.m. on a regular school days. The sixth time a student is tardy to the first period, a detention will be issued for each tardy thereafter. After the tenth time tardy a student will be placed on tardy probation. Please see the student-parent handbook for more information on the Tardy Policy.
Leaving School During the Day
Procedures: A student may not leave campus for any reason without specific approval through the Attendance Office. An absence is considered excused only for the following reasons – medical or dental appointments, personal family matters, court appearance, illness of the student or serious illness or death in the family, or Department of Motor Vehicle appointments. Medical or dental appointments should be scheduled during vacations or after school whenever possible.
Any student needing to leave campus for any reason will be cleared through the Attendance Office if the following procedures are followed:
1. Written Requests
A written request must be brought to the Attendance Office before school begins that day. Upon return to school, students must submit a doctor or dentist slip note.
2. Dismissal Pass
A student will be issued a pass that should be shown to the teacher when the student leaves. The student must check in through the Attendance Office and provide the appointment verification card upon returning to school.
3. Early Dismissal
A student must bring a note signed by a parent/guardian or a parent phone contact must be made stating the reason and the time it will be necessary to leave school. Leaving school grounds without informing the attendance office will result in a “cut” detention.
Absence during Final Exam Week
Any student who is absent during final exam week, other than those students who do not have final exams for certain classes, must have his/her absence verified by a doctor’s note. Students are not allowed to miss final exams for any reason other than a medical illness or an extreme extenuating circumstance. Any student who anticipates that he/she may miss school during final exam week must contact the Assistant Principal of Instruction.
In the event of a need for an extended absence, parents must contact the attendance office one week prior to the anticipated absence. The attendance office will give the student a form to be completed by his or her teachers, counselor and assistant principal regarding homework and possible effects of the absence. If a student will be absent due to a retreat or field trip, it is the student’s responsibility to notify the teachers of the absence.
